History: In the beginning, there was alt.music.pink-floyd. This was in the days where Usenet was at the forefront of messaging of the Internet, and many of us were communicating via University accounts. It was the middle to late 1990s, before the Internet had become indescribably stupid (or perhaps this is merely sentimental revisionism). A community of people who shared a sense of humor and passion for music decided to take to IRC, one of the Internet's first popular many-to-many "chat" systems. Over time, the community took on a significant life of its own beyond the context of Pink Floyd. Newcomers wandered in, many of whom had no connection to alt.music.pink-floyd, or weren't fans of the band at all. Technical and political issues led to a migration away from the original #ampf channel on Undernet to a channel called #jiggyweek, and eventually to #quisp on Sorcerynet, where you can find us today. |

#quisp today: #quisp now resides on Sorcerynet, which is an IRC network specializing mainly in online role playing. However, this is not something we do, unless you count channel residents spontaneously changing their handles to Police Academy characters or Krautrock legends for no rational or constructive reason. There is something ineffable which binds the channel together and keeps regulars returning to the channel. We're not really sure what it is, but you'll get probably get a sense of it if you hang around long enough. In particular, there are two things we share - a sense of humor, and a love for music. We tend to value and respect intelligence, wit, humor, originality, and bonhomie. Many of us have met in real life and have grown accustomed to each other's idiosyncrasies. Don't let this make you feel like an outsider. We hope to get to know you as well, unless, of course, you are a complete bastard. In any case, please be yourself. There is no standard subject of conversation on #quisp, so virtually nothing is off-topic. The most common topic of conversation is music, but you will often find us talking about computers, politics, pop culture, television, and movies. Most channel regulars have jobs and/or educations (or are in the process of completing their educations), and tend to be between 20 and 50 years of age. Most regulars are from the United States, with some in Canada, the UK, Australia, and Norway. We welcome people of any age or background, provided that you can represent with a modicum of literacy, self-respect, and respect for others in the channel. We are comfortable with any background, nationality, or lifestyle, and are always eager to expand our little community with interesting, original people. Channel members drift in and out during the day around their work, leisure, and sleep schedule. Many of us keep our clients connected all the time, breaking up our work or school day with interstitial conversations. It is normal for a few hours to pass at certain times during the day with little or no activity. Conversation tends to be most brisk in the USian evening hours, generally from 23:00 - 07:00 GMT (6:00 PM - 2:00 AM Eastern). We encourage you to join our channel and idle while you work or while you sit in front of your computer doing other things. Occasionally, a vistor is unaccustomed to the fluctuating pace of conversation in #quisp, which can range from hour-long periods of zero activity to a relentless tsunami of text. This is just how it is. #quisp has always been a casual hangout, and regulars frequently multitask. Most will read their (sometimes extensive) backscroll when turning their attention back to IRC after doing other things. Assume that, in time, any questions or comments will be addressed by someone in the channel, though sometimes the answer will come hours later. |

How to access #quisp: #quisp is a channel on Internet Relay Chat (IRC). IRC is a forerunner of today's "chat rooms." But don't call us a chat room - we're an IRC channel. The best way to access IRC is via a dedicated IRC client. To connect with your favorite IRC client, simply: If you don't have an IRC client but would like to install one (which we recommend), try one of these:
